Volunteer Frequently Asked Questions

How do I become a volunteer?
Go to any organization you are interested in and ask about volunteering, or you may come to Army Community Service, Building 2797. There you can fill out a registration form and receive more information about areas to volunteer.

Is childcare available?
Some organizations have funds available for childcare. Contact the Army Volunteer Corps Coordinator for additional information at 210-221-2705.

How does Fort Sam Houston benefit from volunteers?
Volunteers are the Heart of Fort Sam Houston. In 2002 there were 298,850 volunteer hours recorded. This computes to dollars that Fort Sam Houston saved. Without volunteers, many services would not be available to the Installation. Volunteers benefit by gaining job experience, receiving references for paid employment, and learning about additional resources available within our surrounding community.

Volunteer Advisory Council (VAC)

Membership in the Fort Sam Houston Volunteer Advisory Council (VAC) is available to any Fort Sam Houston private organization authorized by the Installation Commander and any military organization or agency that uses volunteers.

The purpose of the VAC is to assist with establishing policies and procedures for the management of installation volunteers, identify volunteer issues in the community, address common problems, share program successes, encourage interaction and support among volunteer organizations, serve as a resource and networking system for organizations to pursue the recruitment, training, and retention of volunteers.

The VAC sponsors the annual Installation Volunteer Recognition Ceremony.
